Our client was about to finalize the purchase of a beautiful century home in Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood, when a home inspector suggested that the “loose fill” insulation in the attic might contain asbestos.
With only 48 hours to waive conditions, the purchaser called Fisher Labs expressing concern about the implications of purchasing a house with asbestos. Our solution was to obtain samples of the insulation and have it tested. Our lab was able to provide the results in only 2 hours, indicating that the insulation was positive for asbestos. Fisher also provided the client with a referral to an asbestos abatement company, who was able to provide the client with a written quote to safely remove the asbestos.
The client presented the seller with Fisher’s lab results and a quotation to remove the asbestos. As a result, the seller agreed to lower the purchase price to make allowances for the removal of the asbestos and the deal closed without delay.
Our client and her family had lived in their 4 bedroom suburban home for almost 10 years. While she loved her home, she suspected something was wrong. Over the last several years her family seemed to always be catching colds and had even developed allergies. It wasn’t until her youngest child was diagnosed with asthma that she suspected her home might be the cause of the illnesses. She concluded that mould within her home may be the case – she had noticed mould patches on the walls in her basement. Through an Internet search she contacted Fisher Labs.
Fisher Labs staff informed her that mould-related illnesses are cause by microscopic airborne mould spores that are inhaled by people living in the house. Fisher recommended testing the air within her home for airborne mould. Fisher arranged to have a contractor come to her home to conduct the air testing and within a week the lab results were in. Fisher’s analysis determined that the home did have unsafe levels of moulds known to cause health problems in people.
Fisher Labs referred the client to three contractors all with experience in identifying the source of mould (often a moisture leak) and safely removing mould. After the contactor completed their work, Fisher took a final round of air samples to confirm the mould counts had returned to safe levels. The client later reported that her entire family began to feel better almost immediately and that even her daughter’s asthma symptoms had begun to abate.
